A new data scientist
Ever wonder who manages the soil sampling data from the State of the Soils Assessment? Or who writes the code that produces our Soil Health Reports? Introducing Jadey Ryan, the WSDA Data Scientist making soils data easier to manage and easier to understand.
Jadey joined the WSDA Soil Health team as a data scientist in January 2022. Previously, she worked in the WSDA Surface Water Monitoring Program and at Tacoma Water. Jadey brings years of experience in environmental science, water and soil sampling, and data management and analytics. She primarily works within the Washington Soil Health Initiative and Sustainable Farms and Fields (SFF). Within these programs, Jadey collects and manages soils and climate data, builds interactive mapping products, and develops decision support tools for growers and the Washington public.
Jadey is working on many exciting data products to be released throughout 2023. Keep reading to learn more about her latest project, that will help estimate the climate benefit from grants distributed through SFF
A new data tool
The Washington Climate Smart Estimator (WaCSE) is now live! This interactive tool supports growers, land managers, and decision-makers in estimating the climate benefits of different conservation practices across Washington’s diverse counties. Using the models and dataset from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) COMET-Planner tool, WaCSE provides a Washington-specific user interface with additional features. Users can compare multiple counties and practices at once, view data in tables and graphs, download spreadsheets and PDFs, and convert emission reduction estimates into easy-to-understand metrics like home energy use or gasoline consumption.
