SUMMARY:Unlocking the Biological Potential of Perennial Grain Crops for Sustainable Agriculture: Advances and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:“Navigating Trade-Offs between Increasing Yield and Perenniality\,” will be presented by Len Wade\, University of Queensland\, Australia. The presentation examines data on dry matter production and allocation by perennial and annual counterparts in relation to their resource use. Whether the perennial is more or less efficient in resource conversion or allocation is only part of the question\, if the perennial were able to access additional resources not available to the annual. To address these complex questions properly requires long-term data\, so systems performance and resource balance can be considered over crop cycles\, and the merits and disadvantages of each system properly examined. Wade considers currently-available evidence to address these questions\, and what is needed to show the way forward.\n“Can Perennial Grain Crops Produce Abundant Yield and Also Persist in Temperate Environments\,” will be presented by Lee De Haan\, Land Institute. Intermediate wheatgrass was initially introduced to the United States for use as a forage grass\, but it is now under development as a perennial grain crop. Breeding efforts for increased grain yield have been underway for about three decades\, more than tripling grain yield relative to forage varieties. Although grain yields remain far below those of annual crops such as wheat\, yields have reached the point where the grain can enter high-value specialty markets\, being sold under the trade name Kernza. He will examine patterns that been revealed in breeding programs and discuss potential for physiological approaches to attaining sustained grain yield in perennials. Several lines of evidence suggest that future perennial grain crops will be capable of abundant yield without sacrificing persistence.\n“Nature’s Wisdom? Implications of Evolutionary Tradeoffs for Perennial Grains\,” will be presented by R. Ford Denison\, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Tradeoffs between longevity and reproduction have been observed across the tree of life. Underlying mechanisms include constraints imposed by allocation of scarce resources among competing processes key to longevity versus reproduction. Natural selection only favors perenniality when a perennial plant has much greater survival or much greater reproduction than an otherwise-identical annual. However\, respect for nature’s wisdom suggests that the annual life-history of wheat’s wild ancestors was not an error. Small increases in allocation to seeds may increase a perennial’s risk of dying only slightly\, allowing rapid early progress through plant breeding\, but to approach the seed yield of our best annual crops is an implausible goal. Existing perennials\, from alfalfa to avocados\, may balance food security with erosion-control and other sustainability benefits better than perennial versions of grain crops like wheat.

The free sessions will be offered February 7th and 21st in Pullman at the Courtyard Marriott\, and in Pasco on March 13th. Each session will be five hours long including lunch. These will be small-scale events to allow for high-levels of interaction and participation. We will frame the workshop in the form of work session groups\, content will be contributed by the audience conversations\, and there will be no presentations. We aim to hear from you about challenges and successes in your soil management\, and to develop ideas for management solutions\, research topics\, collaborations\, and promote the future of soil health solutions in Washington State. \nSeating will be limited and on an first come first serve basis. SUMMARY:WSU ON-FARM COMPOST SHORT COURSE
DESCRIPTION:This two-day short course will focus on increasing your knowledge and skills around on-farm composting. The course will include hands-on exercises in compost recipe formulation\, feedstock assessment\, and construction of aerobic and properly wetted compost piles. End use of compost products to improve production and soil health on-farm and best practices to protect water quality will also be included. Representatives from Washington Department of Ecology and Department of Agriculture will present on regulations effecting on farm regulations and Organic Program participation.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Soil and Global Issues: Solutions Under Foot
DESCRIPTION:Professor Rattan Lal is a distinguished professor of soil science and director of Ohio State University’s Carbon Management and Sequestration Center. Dr. Lal was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change when that organization won the Nobel Peace Prize. Rattan continues to work for international climate solutions with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. \nDr. Lal has been recognized with many awards over his career\, too many to list\, but just over the last 5 years\, he was mentioned by Reuters as part of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds in 2015 and 2016. Rattan was awarded the 2018 World Agriculture Prize and the 2018 World Soil Prize. In April\, he was awarded the Japan Prize in Tokyo\, during a ceremony attended by Emperor Akihito. These three prizes came with a combined award of $540\,000\, all of which Lal has donated back to the Carbon Management and Sequestration Center. \nDr. Lal has authored or co-authored >1700 research journal publications and 22 books\, and he is a leading voice on issues related to climate change and soil carbon\, soil degradation and restoration\, food security\, environmental quality and sustainability. \nProfessor Lal has presided over several societies during his career\, including the International Union of Soil Science (IUSS)\, the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA)\, the International Soil Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO)\, and the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC). Since 1987 Rattan has mentored over 300 post-docs\, visiting scholars\, research scientists\, and graduate students. It is these young scientists that Dr. Lal was thinking about when he donated all his prize money back to his research center. \n  \nRattan Lal 01.23.2020 Seminar Flyer (002)
